Science Investigation

In our TCI "Changes in Matter" Unit, the students learned how substances can be identified.

According to TCI, "Substances have different properties that you can observe and measure to identify those substances. Some properties like color, size, or shape can be seen just by looking at the substance. Others are harder to see. And some properties may eventually cause the substance to change into a new substance."

In a Small Group Investigation, the students observed unique properties of five different powders; flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder and talc. They conducted tests on appearance, solubility, and how the substances reacted to vinegar and iodine. Then they used these properties and their lab results to identify an unknown mystery powder.

The students had a blast with this hands-on experiment and learned a great deal in the process.
